What is High Dynamic Range (HDR)? How Do HDR Cameras Work?

What is High Dynamic Range (HDR)?

The dynamic range of an image is the difference between its darkest and brightest tones (usually pure black and pure white). When the spectral range of a scene exceeds the dynamic range of the camera, the captured object is washed out to white in the output image. Darker areas of the scene will appear darker as well. Image detail is difficult to capture at both ends of this spectrum. HDR mode records images and video without sacrificing detail in both bright and dark areas of the scene.

How An HDR Camera Works?

HDR images are typically created by photographing the same scene three times, each at a different shutter speed. The image sensor then stitches the entire image together by combining all of the photos. This contributes to the creation of an image that resembles what the human eye sees. After capturing an image or a series of images, this post-processing activity combines them and adjusts the contrast at a single aperture and shutter speed to produce an HDR image.

When Should You Use HDR Cameras?

HDR cameras are designed to capture high-quality images in low-light situations. Regardless of whether the light is bright or dim.
