5 ways to make your webcam easier to use

Most of us are used to video conferencing and working from home, we only need a camera to work quickly. However, the camera often has some problems in actual use, such as poor video quality, image freezes, video crashes, etc., which indicates that its performance has begun to weaken. This article introduces the following 5 methods to help you quickly improve the performance of the camera!

1

01. Sufficient bandwidth – unplug some USB devices

USB ports are preconfigured for bandwidth, i.e. it is limited. The camera’s USB port also acts as the power source for it and is usually designed to draw as much current as possible from the port they are connected to, which should be the first consideration when troubleshooting a camera.

2

Some computer motherboards may not have enough bandwidth to power and transmit data to multiple USB devices at the same time. To verify this, unplug all USB devices currently plugged into the computer except the webcam. If the performance of the camera improves, it indicates that there are heavy bandwidth consumers in the previous USB devices. You can check them one by one, and then delete the USB devices that consume too much bandwidth to ensure that the camera has sufficient bandwidth to work.

02. Direct connection – no need to use USB docking station

Those who use the computer as a production tool usually need to connect various peripherals to the computer for collaborative office work to improve efficiency and release productivity. However, laptops have fewer and fewer USB ports, so most people choose USB docking stations to build full-scenario PC workstations.

Although the USB docking station can solve the problem of insufficient interfaces on the computer itself, after connecting multiple devices to the USB docking station, each device will compete fiercely for the limited bandwidth of the USB port connected to the USB docking station, which will inevitably lead to the loss of the conference camera. Bandwidth instability. So the correct thing to do is to plug the camera directly into the computer, this allows it to use as much port bandwidth as it needs

03. Correct matching – insert the same type of USB interface

The USB port may seem simple, but it actually has a lot to offer. The data transmission speed and performance of a USB port are determined by the protocol it carries. Currently, the USB protocol versions include USB1.0/1.1/2.0/3.0/3.1. The data transmission speed and charging performance of different USB protocols vary greatly. USB2.0 and USB3.0 are the current mainstream, and USB3.0 is much faster than USB2.0.

4

If your camera is a USB3.0 port, you should plug it into the computer’s USB3.0 port, and the correct match can give full play to the maximum performance of the device, and USB3.0 can provide a transfer rate of 4.8Gbps, which is 10 times faster than USB2.0. In fact, many 4K cameras must be plugged into a USB 3.0 port to display 4K resolution.

In addition, most 1080P cameras can work normally when connected to USB1.0 or USB2.0. So choosing the port that best suits your camera’s needs will give you the best video quality and less chance of problems.

04. Reduce the resolution – when the bandwidth is not sufficient

As we all know, the higher the resolution, the clearer the video image and the richer the details that can be seen. 4K is actually four times the pixels of 2K, and 2K is also four times the pixels of 1080P. Higher resolutions mean that the bandwidth required to move from one step to the next in video imaging increases dramatically, possibly beyond what your computer can support.

5

An easy way to do this is to change the camera to run at a lower resolution, which will keep the video conference going. But it should be noted that it is more beneficial to set the camera to a higher resolution when recording. Currently, mainstream conference platforms such as Tencent Conference and Zoom do not recommend using resolutions higher than 1080P at 60fps, even if they support 4K. So, if the camera is only used for video conferencing or calling, there is no need to set it to a higher resolution.

05. Reduce the frame rate – get a clearer picture

For those who care more about video image clarity than smooth operation, it is possible to reduce the camera’s frame rate from 60fps to 30fps, halving the number of frames the camera is trying to send, causing it to require a lot less bandwidth. 30fps is the rate of most TV programs, and it looks very natural. In fact, if it exceeds 75fps, it is not easy to notice a significant improvement in fluency.
